The Wheaton Sport Center Stingrays Swim Team (WSCS) offers 6 different squads, to accommodate as many different ability levels of swimmers as possible. The squad descriptions follow:
• Bronze
The bronze squad is targeted to swimmers just beginning competitive swimming. This squad meets 3 hours a week in the Fall and Winter, and is designed to refine the basic fundamentals of all four strokes. Although swim meets are optional, the swimmers will learn how to execute proper starts, turns, and finishes.
Each swimmer should be able to swim at least 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke legally without stopping, attempt to execute 25 yards of breaststroke and butterfly, and they must be able to train for a continuous 1-hour workout.
• Silver
The silver squad is targeted to swimmers who can legally execute all four strokes. This squad meets 5 hours a week in the Fall and Winter, and continues to refine all four strokes, while building the swimmers’ endurance. The goal is to be able to train consistently, understand intervals, and to compete legally in all four strokes.
Each swimmer must be able to make a base set of 5X50’s free on the 1:20. They must be able to train for a 1.5-hour workout.
• Gold
The gold squad is targeted to swimmers 9 and over with competitive swimming experience. This squad meets approximately 6 hours a week in the Fall and Winter. Swimmers are expected to be able to execute all four strokes legally, understand interval training, and set objectives. The goal on this squad is to increase the endurance of the swimmers, while upholding proper technique in all facets of their workouts. The swimmers are expected to be knowledgeable in meet preparation, meet execution, and processing feedback effectively.
Each swimmer must be able to make a base set of 5X50’s free on 1:00.
• Pre-Senior
The pre-senior squad is targeted to swimmers 10 and over, who are ready to compete at a higher level while focusing on more consistent, intense, training sessions. This squad is expected to train approximately 6 hours a week in the Fall and 6.5 hours a week in the Winter. The focus is on efficient swimming, proper training techniques, challenging yardage, quality performance and higher expectations in all facets of the sport.
Each swimmer must be able to make a base set of 5X100’s free on the 1:40.
• Senior
The senior squad is targeted to swimmers 12 and over, who are ready to compete at the highest level, and can train early in the morning. This squad is expected to train approximately 7 hours a week in the Fall and 8.5 hours a week in the Winter, while setting training and performance goals. The focus is on efficient swimming, proper training techniques, challenging yardage, quality performance, executing higher-level drills, and processing a tremendous amount of feedback.
Each swimmer must be able to make a base set of 5X100’s free on the 1:30.
• National
The National squad is targeted primarily to swimmers who are already in High
School. National level swimmers should be self-motivated, consistent in their training, and prepared to train effectively early in the morning. This squad is expected to train approximately 8 hours a week in the Fall and 11 hours a week in the Winter. Swimmers should set high performance objectives, have high quality training expectations, and be willing to process a tremendous amount of feedback. Swimmers should be self-motivated, hard working, committed to swimming and be willing to set very high performance goals.
Each swimmer must be able to make a base set of 5X100’s free on the 1:25.
